Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is common in many women of reproductive age who experience hormonal imbalance due to high levels of androgen or the male hormones. Although the exact reason why women suffer from PCOS isn’t known yet, there are studies that link the condition to high levels of insulin since this is one of the reasons why the ovaries produce more androgen. Genetics is also considered because the condition seems to run in families.

If you have PCOS, you could also have low grade inflammation, which contributes to insulin resistance. Other symptoms include irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain, spotting in between periods, facial hair, acne, hair fall, and infertility. It could also lead to depression, diabetes, and heart disease. There is still no cure for PCOS, but it can be controlled, particularly the symptoms. Here are some ways to get relief at home:

1. Cinnamon

According to a research by the Columbia University, cinnamon is one of the most effective remedies to improve menstrual cycle, particularly in women with PCOS. Additionally, another study indicates that cinnamon can reduce insulin resistance as well.

2. Flaxseed

This superfood can help decrease levels of androgen in the body due to the lignans it contains. These compounds can increase sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) production to bind with testosterone. Flaxseed is also high in fiber that can help delay the metabolism of glucose.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

One of the uses of ACV is to control blood sugar levels and insulin production. If there’s less insulin in the body, there’s also less testosterone, which prevents the male hormone from wreaking havoc.

4. Water

Drinking at least 10 glasses of water a day can help flush free radicals in the body that can cause hormonal imbalance. Aside from water, you can also eat veggies and fruits with high water content, such as watermelon and cucumber.

5. Fenugreek

Another home remedy to try is fenugreek, which improves metabolism of glucose and insulin resistance. In turn, this can lead to balanced hormones. Fenugreek is also known for lowering cholesterol, which can aid in weight loss and even promote heart health.

Aside from the ones mentioned above, you should also watch what you’re eating. Have a diet that’s rich in protein, such as legumes, fish, eggs, and soy. Add omega-3 rich foods, such as almonds, salmon, and halibut. Since weight gain can be a symptom of PCOS, try to lose as much weight as you can. Regular exercises can definitely help, not only in weight loss, but also in improving insulin sensitivity.
