Nose hairs are awkward and unsightly, particularly when they protrude out of your nose. But they play an important role in our health, which should already convince you not to get rid of them. To begin, there are two kinds of hair in our noses:

  1. Vibrissae – This is what people can see and want to pluck
  2. Microscopic Cilia – Obviously, they are very tiny hairs, but have the job of filtering mucus, which can go farther back to the nose and usually into the stomach.

While the vibrissae may seem like nuisance to you since they are near the front of the nose, they have the job of keeping large particles from entering your nose. Unfortunately, if you remove those hairs, these particles, along with germs, could get past the follicles and enter your nose. This can lead to infection.

The Scary Truth

Experts call the area of the face between the nose and the mouth as the “danger triangle.” This is because this part can easily pass infections to the brain. How is this possible? It is because the veins that are present in the nose are the same ones that carry blood from the brain. This becomes really scary because the germs can find the way to your brain. And as a result, this lead to problems, such as the following:

  • Meningitis where inflammation can occur in the protective membranes found in the brain and the spinal cord
  • Brain Abscess which is also another type of swelling and inflammation that occurs in the brain and is related to infection

Both of the mentioned infections are quite rare, but they can happen to anyone – including those who pluck their nose hairs habitually. These infections cause serious problems, especially for people who have weakened immune systems. Additionally, depending on the type of infection, it can be severe and could even be deadly – for instance, with the case of bacterial meningitis.

So next time you’re thinking about plucking a nose hair, leave it alone. Or if you really need to get rid of it, the best solution is to simply trim it. There are commercially available trimmers around and you can find a grooming gadget to help make the job easier for you. Make sure though that you don’t get too close to the skin in your nose as well. Don’t keep it too short, so it can do its job without making you feel uncomfortable with your appearance.
