Some nagging aches can seem innocent and may be dismissed as normal even by a doctor. You could take painkillers and the pain will go away – for a time, until it is back with vengeance.

What you probably ignored as a typical bruise is actually more serious than that. It could be a blood clot, which can be deadly if not cured immediately. Here are some signs of blood clot that you should never ignore:

Blood Clot in Your Heart

This isn’t very common, but it could happen to anyone. The symptoms are often the following:

  • Pain in the chest
  • Heaviness in the chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lightheadedness

Blood Clot in the Brain

Blood clot that has formed in the brain can cause you to have vision problems. You may also find it difficult to speak, along with a sudden and very severe headache – one you can say is the worst kind of headache you’ve ever had.

Blood Clot in Your Abdomen

If you’re experiencing the following, it could mean you have a blood clot in your abdomen:

  • Intense abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

As you can see, the symptoms can easily be mistaken for food poisoning or even a stomach virus. It is always best to talk to a doctor.

Blood Clot in Your Lungs

When blood clot has affected your lungs, this is known as a pulmonary embolism. This is a dangerous problem that can have the following symptoms:

  • Chest pain
  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Coughing up blood
  • Heart palpitations

Blood Clot in Your Leg

Based on the harm it can do to your body, you can consider blot clots a silent killer / PicHelp

The problem with having a blood clot in the leg is that it usually doesn’t have symptoms. Plus, some symptoms appear to be as normal as any other condition. However, if you suspect you have a blood clot in the leg, the first place to look at is your lower leg where this problem generally occurs. Additionally, check for the following signs:

  • Swelling
  • Warm sensation
  • Pain
  • Bruise
  • Tenderness

Stretch your toes upward and if there is pain, you most likely have a blood clot in the leg. Blood clot in the leg can become deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which occurs in any of the deep veins in the body. However, this can form in the arm, but mostly in the legs.

Blood clot generally affects those who are older than 65, but it can happen to anyone, particularly the obese. Make sure you maintain a healthy weight and always report to your doctor if some bruising and pain occur most especially if your family has a history of blood clot.

If you have a peanut allergy, then most definitely peanut butter isn’t good for you. But if you don’t have it, you’re probably wondering whether it is a healthy food or not.

It is a popular ingredient in snack ideas that are considered healthy, but it is also thought of as bad because it can change the focus of your metabolism resulting to:

  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Hormonal imbalance

But if those things above can happen, how can peanut butter be good for anyone? Here are the best reasons why even the health nuts are crazy over peanut butter:

1. Source of Energy

Peanut butter contains carbs, protein, and fat – all in good balance. This makes this spread a great way to boost your energy.

You spread that goodness, but is it really good for your health? / PicHelp

2. Vitamins and Minerals

Another reason why peanut butter is a favorite is because it contains lots of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, B3, and B6. It also has folate, copper, manganese, magnesium, and iron.

3. Antioxidants

Because peanut butter comes from peanuts that have high amounts of antioxidants, peanut butter also has them, including p-coumaric acid. This antioxidant can decrease the risk of developing stomach cancer.

4. Resveratrol

Also found in red wine, peanut butter has resveratrol, which can help lower cardiovascular disease risk.

Now, what’s so bad about peanut butter?

Peanut butter can become unhealthy depending on how much you eat as well as the peanut variety it uses. Among the reasons why you should avoid peanut butter are:

1. Omega-6

This isn’t bad on its own, but peanut butter has an imbalanced ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids (20:1). The healthy ratio is 2:1. Too much omega-6 causes inflammatory-related diseases, including asthma, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes.

2. Mold

Peanuts may contain mold or mycotoxins, which can also be present in peanut butter. Mold is toxic and can cause depression, along with other health problems, including allergies.

3. Aflatoxins

Some molds produce aflatoxins, which may be in peanut butter. Aflatoxins are not only toxic, but are also carcinogens. Although aflatoxins in low dose may not have a negative effect on humans, there are some studies linking the chemicals to liver cancer, mental retardation, and stunted growth.

Although there are downsides to consuming peanut butter, you can choose the one that’s right for you. Buy organic peanut butter and ideally made from Jungle or Valencia peanuts since these two varieties don’t grow on the ground.

Caffeine is a stimulant that is naturally found in herbs, coffee, and tea. It is a drug, but can be used without breaking the law. It is socially accepted and is a very popular beverage all over the world.

Caffeine is normally used to wake the brain and body up in the morning. It is effective, which is why many athletes use it to help them enhance their performance.

Caffeine Success Stories

One example is Elizabeth Beisel, a US swimmer who drank coffee before her competition at the Summer Olympics in 2012. It was the most important race of her life and she performed well – so well that she achieved two of her best times. Weldon Johnson, the founder of LetsRun.com was not fond of coffee, but he heard about the beverage’s effects to runners. He drank a cup of coffee before the race and he felt that it worked on him. For the first time ever, he was able to complete 10 kilometers in just 30 minutes.

Sports stars from cyclists to basketball and baseball players to sprinters are all prohibited from using performance enhancers – except caffeine. They are allowed to have a cup of coffee or enjoy a can of soda.

How Does Caffeine Boost Performance?

Although caffeine is truly remarkable in upping performance, very little is known about how it really works – particularly its intracellular system of action. But recent studies have shown that caffeine has great benefits for athletes and for active people. At a cellular level, drinking caffeine inhibits the action of adenosine A2A receptors. A few cups of coffee daily can block and bind the nerve cells that naturally constrain the activities of the striatum, the brain’s center for voluntary movement. This gives the body and the brain that needed “jolt.”

Caffeine stimulates the proper functioning of the central nervous system. As a result, alertness of the brain is enhanced and reaction time – which is very critical in sports – is increased as well. Caffeine can also inhibit reuptake of calcium, while increasing its release. These two effects allow the person to have more stamina.

How to Use Caffeine Effectively

Recent studies show that more isn’t necessarily better. In fact, caffeine should be consumed in low to moderate doses. The recommended amount is less than or equal to three mg/kg of the weight of the body. In other words, if you are 170 pound man, you can drink one to two cups of coffee daily to perform well in high intensity sports, such as rowing and swimming.

Last June, a bartender realized a really important fact in his life: that the sun and limes don’t mix.

Justin Fehntrich suffered from second degree burns on his left hand after he squeezed limes for margarita drinks outdoors. It turns out that although limes are beneficial to our health, they can cause “margarita burn.” Fehntrich volunteered as a bartender in Fire Island for an LGBT advocacy fundraiser.

While preparing for the event, Justin Fehntrich helped squeeze about 100 limes. He was shocked to find that this innocent task sent him to the hospital with one red hand that is swollen and with blisters. The burns, as told by the doctors, were because of phytophotodermatitis, which is also called the margarita burn.

The Science behind the Margarita Burn

It may sound ridiculous to some people, but the margarita burn is a real thing. It has been documented in many parts of the world and has happened to a number of people. In fact, there was another bartender apart from Justin who also suffered from the same kind of skin burn, although his is less severe.

Phytophotodermatitis is caused by photosensitizers, which come from the oils and juices of vegetables and fruits (in the case of Fehntrich, limes). The photosensitizers cause people to become very sensitive to sunlight. The other bartender did not sustain the same kind of horrible injuries as with Fehntrich because he was in a shaded area when it happened.

Who is at Risk and What is the Treatment?

Oftentimes, the chefs and the bartenders are the ones who are most susceptible to margarita burn because they handle citrus fruits. However, anyone can have this kind of sensitivity. To avoid such burns, you should know about the following facts about it:

  • Certain plants and fruits cause the reaction, which is triggered when the chemicals are exposed to sunlight and other ultraviolet lights.
  • Unlike other sun-related skin problems, phytophotodermatitis only affects the skin that has been exposed to the chemical and not the sun.
  • Aside from limes, the chemicals are found in other citrus fruits, wild parsley, wild dill, wild parsnip, and buttercups.
  • Although phytophotodermatitis is not rare, the cases in the United States have not been established, which is why there are some doctors who remain clueless about the problem.

Margarita burn is comparable to other types of burn, which is why it is also treated like the others. Antibiotics are used and the burns are covered with gauze until they are fully healed. As for Fehntrich, he had to wear gauze for about three weeks and he had to take a leave from work while waiting for his skin to regrow.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received a slew of consumer complaints, which prompted the federal agency to issue a safety alert. This is quite rare for hair and beauty products, since the FDA does not receive these many complaints.

Consumers protested against a particular product, a cleansing hair conditioner line by WEN. The product is actually already the subject of a class-action lawsuit regarding unnatural hair loss claims that began in 2014 and is still ongoing until today.

The line consisted of low lather conditioners and is presented by Chaz Dean, a celebrity stylist. The products come in various scents namely sweet almond mint, pomegranate, and lavender. Although the conditioners are quite popular, the FDA received a total of 127 reports about the line’s adverse effects, which included:

  • Hair loss
  • Hair breakage
  • Itching
  • Rashes
  • Balding

With almost 130 complaints received, along with over 21,000 complaints to the hair stylist, to his company, Chaz Dean, Inc., and to the manufacturer/marketer of the product Guthy Renker, the FDA issued a warning. According to the FDA, they are still unable to determine the cause of the negative effects. The agency also urged the company to provide them with data that can help understand the hair problems. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the hairstylist gave a statement that they care about the hair health of their customers. The company also suggests that the complainants seek medical assistance as the problem is quite complex. The spokesperson further stated that WEN products are safe and for over 16 years, millions of bottles have been sold.

Further investigation led to exploring the ingredients of the conditioner line. The ingredients are as follows:

  • Aloe vera
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Soy protein
  • Chamomile extract

The ingredients do seem harmless, except for a few exceptions. The hair conditioners contained preservatives namely methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone. Both of these preservatives have been linked to irritation of the lungs, skin, and eyes. Unfortunately, there are no strict regulations concerning makeup and skin products. The only one that is related to the industry is the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Unfortunately, it is very weak one and wasn’t updated after 1938.

There is a new bill introduced recently, which aims to update the act mentioned above. However, it is still not approved and the US remains to ban only 11 ingredients for beauty products, such as chloroform and mercury. Meanwhile, Europe does not allow over 1,300 ingredients.

Many of us promise to do our best to lose some pounds before a special occasion. Often, this would entail having a strict diet and exercising. Unfortunately, not everyone is ready to take on such ordeal – especially the part that involves working out on a regular basis.

But if you don’t have the time or the energy to exercise, you have a health condition that restricts your movement, or you are simply lazy, there are ways to lose 20 pounds if you have at least a month to spare. Here’s how:

Step 1: Do some calculations.

A pound of fat is equivalent to 3,500 calories. So, to lose 20 pounds, this means you have to reduce 70,000 calories. This seems unrealistic, but to be on the safe side, simply get rid of 500 to 1,000 calories every day.

Step 2: Eat healthy.

You’ve probably heard about this so many times and that’s because it’s true. If you want to lose weight, eat healthy. You have a lot of options here such as:

Step 3: Drink healthy.

Many people make the mistake of drinking fruit juices. But even the natural ones are not recommended if you want to lose weight. They have high amounts of sugar, which will not contribute to your weight loss goal. Also avoid beer, soda, and wine; instead, drink tea, water, or beverages that have no calories. It also helps if you drink water before you eat, so you feel fuller without eating a lot.

Check this Youtuber’s tips as well.

Step 4: Use smaller plates.

Eat less by serving food in smaller plates. This won’t make you feel like you’re depriving yourself.

Step 5: Eat slow.

The brain registers the feeling of being full after 20 minutes of eating. Eat slowly, so you eat less.

Some Tips

It helps if you don’t weigh yourself every day; limit the weighing to every week. Daily weighing can discourage you if you see that you’re not losing weight fast enough. You should also take multivitamins daily, so you still get the nutrients your body needs. You can also speed up the weight loss process by taking supplements, such as L-glutamine, which is an amino acid that can help you control your hunger. Another supplement is L-carnitine, which speeds up the process of burning fat.

If you’re working out and you’re not losing weight, here’s one of the reasons why.

According to science, exercising will NOT help you lose weight. While there is no denying that exercise is important to our health, it does not promote weight loss. Therefore, if you’re aiming to lose weight, don’t focus on exercise; instead, change your diet into a healthy one.

A team of researchers led by a British cardiologist Aseem Malhotra discovered that food is the main culprit to obesity. Sports and other physical activities do influence our health, but that’s about it. Exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and dementia among many health conditions. However, it does not help with weight loss. This is because exercise does not burn enough calories, which is the main reason why waistlines expand.

The Real Reason Why You’re Not Losing Weight

Physical activity and being overweight are not related. No matter how much you exercise, if you don’t stay away from unhealthy foods, you will not lose weight at all. The researchers argue that it is time to leave the following misconceptions behind:

  • Exercising can burn calories, resulting to weight loss.
  • Avoiding diet that is high in fat.
  • Eating foods that are high in carbohydrates is better than eating fatty foods.
  • Sugary drinks, junk food, and alcohol are fine as long as you exercise regularly.

What is surprising to many people is that eating foods that are rich in fat is good. But according to the researchers, if you want to lose weight, adopting a diet that is high in fat is ideal, especially if the diet consists of foods that are low in carbohydrates and sugar.

This is why it is recommended that athletes and those who are very physically active should stop eating foods that are high in carbohydrates. Instead, they should be eating foods that are high in fat because fat can provide more energy and does not need replacement.

You can still be healthy even if you're not slim.
You can still be healthy even if you’re not slim.

So next time you visit the gym, don’t think about your weight loss goals. Exercise is good for your heart as well as your blood vessels and can therefore lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. It can also lower risk for breast and colon cancers. While exercising on a regular basis can help you increase your lifespan, it will not help you shed those unwanted pounds. Also note that we reach a plateau, in which working out will not burn more calories than simply eating fewer calories.

Activated charcoal has many uses, but the main reason why homes have this product is because it is used as an antidote for several kinds of poison.

Although activated charcoal can be bought at a modest fee, you can save that money by making your own, especially if you’re into DIY activities. Here are the things you’ll need:

  • Coconut shells
  • Burning sink
  • Purified water
  • Pail
  • Oven
  • Hammer
  • Draining tray
  • Calcium chloride (25% solution)
  • Ziploc bags

You can also use wood in place of the coconut shells and zinc chloride instead of calcium chloride. If you don’t want to use a hammer, you can use your blender as an alternative.

With the materials and ingredients ready, here are the steps in making activated charcoal:

  1. Get rid of meat and fiber from the coconut shells. Wash them as well and allow them to dry completely.
  2. After that, burn the coconut shells in the burning sink at a temperature of at least 575 F. Do this for about four hours or until the shells turn to ash.
  3. Gather the ash and place it in the pail.
  4. Add the calcium or zinc chloride and soak the ash completely. Leave it in the solution for 24 hours, which will turn it into activated charcoal.
  5. Take the charcoal, put it on the draining tray, and wash there using the purified water, which will remove the chemical solution.
  6. Drain for at least an hour.
  7. Put the charcoal in the oven and fire it up to 215 F. Bake for about three hours.
  8. When done, use a hammer or blender to crush the charcoal into powder. Make sure it is in its smallest form.
  9. Finally, take the charcoal and store in Ziploc bags.

If you’re going to use the homemade activated charcoal for poisons, mix a third of a cup of the charcoal with one cup of water.

Other Uses of Activated Charcoal

Aside from trapping chemicals and toxins to get rid of the poison, activated charcoal can also be used for the following purposes:

  • Teeth whitening, especially for removing stains caused by berries, wine, and coffee
  • Treating gas and bloating as it binds food byproducts that cause gas and discomfort
  • Preventing hangovers
  • Cleansing and removing toxic mold in the body

Since water has many impurities, such as solvents, pesticides, and other chemicals, you can use activated charcoal for filtering water. It’s always so handy to have activated charcoal in your home and it’s even more rewarding that you made it yourself.

If your nails look abnormal, it could mean something is wrong with your health. But when it is yellow, this problem is mostly due to use of nail polish. Nails become stained or yellow because of frequent nail polish use and the leftover dyes. The best way to avoid this is to use a base coat, which can help protect the nails and also keep the colors for longer.

Smokers mostly have yellow nails because of nicotine and tar. Obviously, the ultimate solution here is to stop smoking. It does not just cause yellow nails, but can also damage our health. There are other methods for removing the stain, so you have stronger and healthier looking nails:

Hydrogen Peroxide

This solution has always been known for its whitening abilities, which you can use to get rid of yellow nails. Before you proceed, make sure the product is only 3% hydrogen peroxide. Here are the steps:

  1. In a cup, add half a cup of water.
  2. Put three to four tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide in the water.
  3. When the mixture is combined well, soak your nails for at least10 minutes.
  4. Take your hand out and use a toothbrush to scrape the nails gently.
  5. Rinse with water.

Do this method at least once a week until you see the stain is gone.

Because of the natural bleaching properties of lemon, it is no wonder that it can also be used to remove the yellow color in your nails. Here’s what you’re going to do:

  1. Squeeze lemon juice into a bowl. The amount should be enough to let you soak your fingernails in.
  2. Once the lemon juice is ready, put your nails there for about two minutes.
  3. Again, use a toothbrush to remove the stains left.
  4. Rinse your nails after.
That nail isn't just dirty, it's "sick"
That nail isn’t just dirty, it’s “sick”

You can use a moisturizing lotion after you’re done. This is a safe method so you can do this twice a day to get great results.

If you’re using whitening toothpaste, you don’t need to buy anything else for your nails. This is great for people with mild stains on their nails. If you don’t know your toothpaste can whiten teeth, just look at its ingredients if it has hydrogen peroxide and do the following:

  1. Rub a little bit of toothpaste on each nail.
  2. Leave it there for 10 minutes.
  3. Scrub the nails using a toothbrush or nail brush.
  4. Remove the toothpaste using damp cotton balls.

Repeat this method two to three times weekly.

If your nails are stained because of a fungal infection, you shouldn’t do the methods above. Instead, seek help from a dermatologist, especially if the nails are peeling and flaking.
