The body has over 600 muscles and one of the strongest resides in your mouth: your tongue. With its help, we can taste and swallow our food and even talk to other people. Therefore, it is important that we take good care of it. A healthy tongue is distinguished through its color and it should be pink. There are times though when it is covered in white coating, which can lead to problems such as bitter taste in mouth and even bad breath.

Causes of White Tongue

If you have white tongue, it could be due to any of the following:

  • Dead cells stuck between swollen papillae (the small nodules that cover the tongue)
  • Dehydration
  • Food debris
  • Dry mouth
  • Fever
  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Bacteria

Other reasons include poor oral hygiene and eating foods that are highly acidic and/or sugary. There are also diseases that cause this problem, including liver congestion, oral thrush, candida, and syphilis among many others. If you’re taking antibiotics or other medications, they could play a role as well.

How to Get Rid of White Coating on Your Tongue

Most of the time, a white tongue is harmless and will go away after a few days. Plus, you can speed it up with the following home remedies:

1. Salt

This is one of the best remedies for white tongue because of its coarse nature, which will help scrape the dead cells and debris. It also has antiseptic properties that can kill bacteria. To use, just sprinkle some salt to your tongue and use a toothbrush to scrub it gently for one minute. Rinse with warm water after. Do this twice a day.

2. Oil Pulling

Using a tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil, swish the liquid around your mouth for about 15 minutes. Do this every day before you brush your teeth in the morning.

3. Aloe Vera

Using a tablespoon of the juice of this plant, swish it around for a few minutes before spitting it out. Drink a tablespoon of the juice after as it helps treat oral problems, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.

4. Baking Soda

Exfoliate your tongue with this common kitchen ingredient. Just a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with lemon juice will help eliminate the problem.

The remedies above truly help get rid of white tongue problems. If it is serious and doesn’t go away after a few days, you should consult your doctor as it could be a sign of an underlying disease.
