If you have plaque on your teeth, it means that bacteria have accumulated there. Plaque consists of harmful germs that will thrive in your mouth and remain on your teeth if you don’t act on it fast. Some types of plaque can cause your teeth to deteriorate, while other types can result to gum disease.

Dental plaque is almost invisible except if it is stained. But even if you can’t see it, plaque can bring serious damage not only to your teeth, but to your whole mouth. It can interact with some foods that you eat, releasing acid that can give you tooth decay. If you don’t do something about your plaque, it can become tartar, which is even more difficult to get rid of. You can go to the dentist to solve this problem, but in the meantime, you can follow these easy steps to remove plaque at home:

1. Floss and Brush: Remove food particles and even germs by flossing regularly. Rinse well afterward and brush your teeth to maintain a healthy mouth. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a brushing technique where you hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle. Point upward if you’re cleaning your upper teeth and point to the opposite when cleaning your lower teeth.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar: This acidic substance has been known to be effective in eliminating dental plaque. To use ACV for your teeth, just soak your toothbrush in vinegar for a few minutes. After that, brush your teeth. Make sure that you rinse your whole mouth well as too much acid can damage your tooth enamel.

3. Baking Soda: Another kitchen item that you can use for your teeth is baking soda. What you need to do here is to first dampen your toothbrush and then put some baking soda on it. Instead of using toothpaste, you will brush with this ingredient. You can also add a bit of salt when you use the soda for brushing your teeth.

4. DIY: Here’s a mixture that you can make at home. You’ll need the following:

  • Four tablespoons of linden flower
  • Four tablespoons of sunflower seeds
  • One liter of water

Once you have all the ingredients, just mix them all together and cook them in low heat for 30 minutes. After eating, use the mixture as a toothpaste substitute.

These methods are definitely effective for removing plaque on your teeth. However, if plaque is stubborn and does not go away after treating it, you should make it your priority to visit the dentist as soon as possible.
