A recent study showed that soda could shorten a person’s lifespan, based on the findings of the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. The researchers measured the caps of chromosomes hat are linked to aging called telomeres. There were 5,000 people who participated in the study where their blood samples were taken, and despite being free from diabetes and heart disease, the persons who drank the most soft drinks and other sugary beverages had shorter telomeres than those who limit their consumption.
How Dangerous is Drinking a Lot of Soda
Short telomeres indicate that there is greater and faster cellular aging going on. In fact, based on the study, the people who consume 20 ounces of soda reduced their lifespan by almost five years. What’s alarming about this is that the shortening of the mentioned chromosomes are equivalent to smoking daily, which means that drinking sodas is as harmful as smoking cigarettes.
Regular consumption of sweet beverages could influence the development of diseases as this could strain the metabolic control of the body over sugars. Additionally, drinking the sodas can accelerate cellular aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sodas and other sugary drinks have become more popular than ever during the past 30 years. This actually coincides with the rise in number of obese people.
What Consumers Need to Understand
Many people are still fond of drinking soda every time they can. As a matter of fact, a lot of consumers choose sodas over water, which is a much better alternative. The study performed by a team of researchers at the University of California San Francisco started in 1999 until 2002 where healthy adults, ranging from 20 years old to 65 years old joined the survey. It is to note that even though the research was done in a well-respected environment, it still remained an observational study as it only involved one dietary recall as well as one blood sample.
Nevertheless, this does not mean that the consumers should take it lightly. The fact that many consumers, particularly 50% of them consume soda almost every day, this has turned into a strange habit. This bad habit can potentially cause heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and just like the study suggests, a shorter lifespan. While the study confirmed that there were no negative effects from drinking noncarbonated drinks, diet sodas, and fruit juices, it is still more preferred to go for healthier options, including water and green tea.
