Dry, flaky skin can be annoying. They do not only look dull and ugly, they can also feel itchy. So, how do you keep your skin feel soft, smooth and moisturized throughout the year?

Moisturizing creams and lotion can do the trick, but if you’re looking for a solution that’s long lasting, natural and, most important, cheap, you might want to give these home remedies a try.

Lather on Milk

The use of milk in skincare dates back to ancient times. Queen Cleopatra used milk in her bath to keep her skin soft and supple. Of course, filling a whole tub of milk is not cheap. A practical solution is to apply milk only on your dry areas. For this regimen, even powdered milk works, but we recommend whole cow or goat milk for better result because it contains high amount of fatty acids that moisturizes and softens the skin.

How to do it: Apply milk on dry skin area and let it stay for 20 to 30 minutes. Wash off thoroughly after since milk breeds bacteria if left on the skin.

Bathe Cold

While a steamy shower feels soothing, it can wreak havoc on your skin. Hot water strips your skin of its natural oil barrier, making it feel uncomfortably dry. So, dial down the temp and enjoy a cold bath. Cold shower can help refine your hair and skin as well as tighten your cuticles and pores, preventing dirt from getting in. It also prevents skin from being stripped of its natural oil too quickly.

Try Avocado and Honey Face Mask

Many ladies have to sworn to this, and you probably will do so too after giving this combo a try. Avocado is loaded with vitamin E, which protects the skin against sun damage and free radicals. This vitamin also keeps the skin soft and smooth by locking in moisture and preventing evaporation and moisture loss. Honey, on the other hand, helps brighten the skin and fights bacteria that breed on pores clogged by dirt and dry skin.

How to do it: Mash avocado in a bowl and add in honey. Stir well to create a consistent paste. Apply to skin and leave for 10 to 20 minutes. Thoroughly rinse face after.

Use Curd

A recipe directly from your fridge, curd is one of the cheapest and most effective solutions out there for dry skin problem, especially during winter. Dr. J.S. Tripathi of the faculty of Ayurveda at Sir Sundar Lal Hospital of BHU told the Times of India that the use of curd for dry skin dates back to thousands of years, and curd has proven its effectiveness time and again. The good ol’ curd hydrates the skin and soothes the dryness and itchiness. Also, the lactobacillus bacteria it contains combat the bad bacteria that may breed on the pores when these get clogged by dirt and dry skin cells.
