Today’s perception is geared towards modernization that sometimes the meaning of the term ‘organic’ is tainted. As many individuals are inclined to sophistication, defining organic can be a tough one especially when Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is around. So what does organic and GMO means? How can the former be determined?
Organic and GMO
The idea on organic is quite simple. It has only something to do with ‘natural’ from how the raw material or ingredient is grown to the process of making the product. This only means that there are no derivatives or artificial ingredients, synthetic pesticides, or ionizing radiation used in growing crops and making the end-product.
When an organism’s genetic material has been artificially manipulated in laboratory by virtue of Genetic Engineering, it is now referred to as the GMO. The organism produced tend to be unstable and is considered to be unhealthy by lots of developed countries.
Processes Involved Before Certified as Organic
As mentioned earlier, a product has to be verified first before it can be labelled as organic. To ensure that the raw ingredient is organic, farmers are given emphasis on following some guidelines and processes.
- Practice Organic Farming. Conventional farming makes use of pesticides derived from chemical and synthetic ingredients. On the other hand, organic farming adapts the traditional approaches in growing crops such as the use of compost and manure. In addition to this, crop rotation is also practiced to maintain soil’s integrity and health.
- Careful Inspection. The farm and facilities are carefully inspected by a government-approved certifier. This process ensures that the farmer abides religiously to organic standards. At this point, the number of animals are also inspected in accordance to the land area. Nonetheless, inspection is done per schedule or as a surprise visit.
- Organic System Plan. To determine whether the farmer meets the organic standards, an outline of the whole operation has to be submitted referred to as the organic system plan. This details the approaches on soil management, pest control, and many more.
Certification on Imported Products
When goods and other products are imported, the same practices are observed. Annual inspection is conducted at their respective places. Before these products are accepted in the USA, it is first certified by the USDA National Organic Program.
The Catch on Organic Labeling
Organic crops and goods are meticulously raised in farms with the use of organic resources. The idea on ‘organic’ does not only start and end with the practice of organic farming, but also with organic certification. This is how the ‘organic’ is distinguished from GMO.
