There are a lot of things you can do on an empty stomach. You’ve probably heard about drinking water the moment you wake up to help cleanse your body and even help you lose weight.
There are also some health fads, such as the lemon water elixir, which is said to be best consumed before you’ve had anything for breakfast.
While these things are recommended for an empty stomach, there are certain things that you should avoid in the same circumstance. Here they are:
Food and Drink
1. Tea or Coffee
These two beverages when drank first thing in the morning can actually do more harm than good. Coffee is acidic and can therefore increase stomach acidity, which causes indigestion and heartburn. Meanwhile, tea can suppress the production of gastric juices, which means it reduces acid and bile in the stomach.
Never drink alcohol on an empty stomach because this will lead to the absorption of alcohol directly to the bloodstream. This will result to the widening of blood vessels, causing temporary low pulse rate as well as blood pressure. When alcohol concentration is high in the blood, this increases loss of control.
This beverage contains high amounts of carbonated acids, which when mixed with stomach acids can cause nausea, discomfort, and other health problems.
Although considered healthy, avoid eating tomatoes when you’re hungry. It has acids that can react with the stomach acids that can produce insoluble gels, which can cause stomach stones or calculus.
5. Spicy Food
Avoid spicy food if you haven’t eaten anything yet because it can react with the natural acids in the stomach. This can lead to cramps and acidic reaction in the lining of your tummy.
If you think you’ll lose more weight by exercising without eating anything, you’re wrong. When you exercise, the body uses glycogen, which comes from the food you eat. If you don’t have enough glycogen, your body will end up burning muscles, therefore leading to storing more fat.
This can cause you to have motion sickness. Also avoid eating foods that cause gassiness, such as broccoli, cauliflower, aerated drinks, and the like.
3. Grocery Shopping
Always shop full unless you want to spend more money on foods that are high in fat and calories.
If you haven’t eaten anything yet, make sure that the next thing that you’re going to do is not included in the list above.
