It’s settled now.

British Medical Journal (BMJ) just published a study titled, The Darwin Awards: Sex Differences in Idiotic Behaviour in which they, without a doubt concluded that men are significantly more likely to engage in idiotic behaviors, or simply put, just idiots.

Before you call baloney on this story or think that this is just a hoax or an April fool’s tale, the BMJ employed a methodology analyzing sex differences in idiotic behavior. The organization found out that males are more likely to be admitted to an emergency department after accidental injuries that are just results of plain idiocy. The same is true to cases of sporting injury and even fatal road traffic collision and many other things that could easily be avoided.

Men are Idiots

Known as the “male idiot theory” or MIT, the idea also went under the scrutiny of Northeast England researchers. They claimed that the difference in risk seeking behavior could explain why men are generally regarded as idiots, after all idiots do stupid things.

The group used the data gathered by the Darwin Award over a 20 year period, that’s from 1995 to 2014 – and men dominated the list of winners, with 88.7% so they came out the winner, hands down (or losers, depending on your perspective).

Among the most idiotic acts awarded by the said body included the following:

  • James Burns of Michigan, who died while attempting to repair his truck from underneath while it was still in motion
  • Polish farmer Krystof Azninski, who won a “contest of masculinity,” trumping his friends – who had stripped naked and were hitting each other over the head with frozen turnips – by cutting off his own head with a chainsaw
  • A terrorist, who posted a letter bomb with insufficient postage and, upon its return, unthinkingly opened his own letter

These stories were validated by the Darwin Awards Committee.

The authors of the study however admitted possible pitfalls in their results: women simply nominated men more often for the Darwin Award or the actions can all be explained with alcohol influence, after all men consume more alcohol then women.

Admittedly, the male idiot theory deserves further study according to the researchers. “With the festive season upon us, we intend to follow up with observational field studies and an experimental study – males and females, with and without alcohol – in a semi-naturalistic Christmas party setting,” they wrote.
