Night sweats are normal if you are in an overheated environment or you wear thick or several layers of clothing. However, if your bedroom is not hot at all and yet you wake up with your clothes drenched in sweat, this could be related to a medical condition
If you’re curious as to why you are sweaty at night, here are the top reasons why:
1. High Body Temperature: This is one of the most common reasons in which the body sweats because of the sleep environment. A bedroom that has high temperature can elevate your body temperature. The same thing happens if you wear thick clothes at night or you bury yourself under the blanket.
2. 4AM Body Temperature Dip: Some individuals experience a drop in their body temperature, usually around 4 o’clock in the morning. The autonomic nervous system – the one responsible for such dip, along with the heart rate and blood pressure – may urge the body to sweat even more at this time of the day.
3. Sleep Disorder: Unfortunately, if you sweat a lot at night, this could also mean that you are suffering from a sleep disorder. This is actually not surprising because sweating does affect a good night’s rest. Among the top sleep disorders that cause night sweats are:
• Sleep Apnea: This is when you find it hard to breathe when you’re asleep. As a result, you increase your effort, so you can breathe properly. Every apnea attack leads to a sudden burst of cortisol (stress hormone) just so you can breathe normal again.
• Hot Flushes: Women experience this as a sign of menopause. Night sweats occur because of the loss of estrogen and progesterone hormones in older women.
• Alcohol-Related: Some people cannot sleep at night without drinking alcohol. When they consume any type of alcoholic drink, they tend to sweat more than usual. This is because alcohol is considered a muscle relaxant, which means it could upset the upper airways. When the upper airways are affected, this could worsen snoring as well as sleep apnea.
• Sleep Disorder Caused by Anxiety: Stress and panic attacks can cause you to be sweaty at night. Those who have recurrent nightmares that are generally a result of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) sweat more than average people.
