A new study has showed that there is one common food additive used in many processed foods that can cause several health problems. Processed foods including candy, ice cream, breads, and mayonnaise contain the culprit known as emulsifiers. Emulsifiers, according to the study published in Nature last February 25, can cause various inflammatory bowel diseases, such as colitis, metabolic syndrome, and Crohn’s disease.
Emulsifiers are a Huge Problem
The biggest concern about emulsifiers is that they are virtually everywhere. Almost every kind of food that is processed contains this food additive. The manufacturers use emulsifiers in order for their product to have enhanced texture and have a longer shelf life. Unfortunately, emulsifiers are a danger to the bacteria you have in your gut.
What the Study Says
According to the report from the Georgia State University, emulsifiers are the sources of changes in the digestive tract, which then lead to inflammation of the intestines. Eventually, when the intestines are inflamed for a long time, a person can have Crohn’s disease. It is quite alarming that there is a huge increase in the number of people who have type 2 diabetes around the world as well as other health problems, including ulcerative colitis, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. The researchers believe that there is a connection between these health issues and the emulsifiers in processed food.
When the researchers studied the food additive, they discovered that the emulsifiers are capable of disrupting the ecosystem of the gut’s homeostasis of microbial inhabitants, including good bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. As a result, intestinal inflammation happens, which initiate the development of disorders of the gut, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and metabolic syndrome.
IBD includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, in which millions of people worldwide are afflicted. Oftentimes, when a person has inflammatory bowel disease, it is debilitating and serious. Meanwhile, metabolic syndrome includes a number of disorders that are related to obesity. When not controlled, this can lead to type 2 diabetes as well as liver diseases.
Overeating is NOT the Main Cause of Obesity
The study contradicts the belief that eating a lot causes obesity. According to the researchers, the changes in the GI tract that result to inflammation can be the underlying cause of eating excessively. The study also suggests that there is lack of testing when it comes to food additives. This is why they contain chemicals that promote various diseases.
