The common cold and flu can be bothersome. If you have congested nose and fever, you can’t do anything but stay at home. You probably can’t sleep because you don’t feel well.
While there are ways to get rid of cold and flu, you don’t have to keep swallowing a handful of supplements or not-so-tasty concoctions. Here’s one natural way of zapping congestion: the wet sock treatment. If you have a cold or flu, tonight is the night to try this naturopathic treatment.
How to Do the Wet Sock Treatment
The wet-sock treatment is a kind of water-based therapy in which you put socks on at night – but not just any socks. The pair should be ice cold!
And you should sleep throughout the night wearing them. It does sound ridiculous, but many people have already attested to the effectiveness of this method. So how do you do this treatment? You will need the following:
- A pair cotton socks (thin)
- A pair of wool socks (thick)
- A small towel
- A bucket or a tub
You can also use yarrow tea and lavender and rosemary essential oils, but these are optional. When you have all the necessary items needed, here are the things that you should do:
1.) In cold water, soak the cotton socks. You can substitute yarrow tea for water.
2.) When the socks are completely wet, place them in the refrigerator.
3.) Meanwhile, in the tub or bucket, add very hot water (as hot as you can handle). Soak your feet there for up to 20 minutes. You can add lavender or rosemary oil here to help you relax and sleep better.
4.) After 20 minutes, pat your feet dry using your towel. Optionally, you can use rosemary oil for massaging your feet to boost circulation.
5.) Get the wet socks from your refrigerator and put them on your feet.
6.) Cover the wet socks with the thick wool socks. Make sure this pair is dry.
You can now go to bed after following the directions above. Don’t worry about your feet getting cold; you will soon feel warm in just a couple of minutes. This is due to the blood rushing through your body because of this treatment. You can repeat this treatment consistently for three nights to completely get rid of common cold and flu.
How Does This Work?
When the water temperature applied to the body is above or below the normal body temperature, it fuels the reflex arc, which contains nerves that send signals to the glands, organs, and muscles. The fluids in the body are in a closed circuit, so it makes it easier for one part to impact the other parts. Therefore, when you have wet hot or cold applications, the wetness will deeply penetrate into the skin. It then impacts the lymph and the blood rather than just the skin or the muscles. This is why the wet sock treatment is effective.
