Sunscreens are important even though it is not the summer season. But unfortunately, many of the commercial products available today are laden with chemicals that are toxic to the body, including those that disrupt the endocrines. Instead of protecting us from the sun’s rays, we end up getting skin cancer and accelerated growth of free radicals in the body.

But this does not mean you should just stay at home, away from the sun. Many people are vitamin D deficient these days and it is only right that we get sun exposure. However, we also need to protect ourselves. The good news is that you can make your own sunscreen using ingredients that are natural and safe without affecting your health.

How to Make Sunscreens at Home

There are different types of sunscreens and you can choose which one suits you best:

Waterproof Sunscreen

Here are the ingredients you need:

  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • ¼ cup shea butter
  • ¼ cup avocado oil
  • ¼ cup beeswax
  • Two tablespoons zinc oxide
  • 15 drops carrot seed oil
  • 10 drops myrrh oil

With the ingredients above ready, here are the steps on how to make this sunscreen:

1. Melt coconut oil, along with shea butter and beeswax. Use low heat only.

2. After a few minutes, add the other ingredients.

3. Stir constantly until the paste is formed.

4. Store the mixture in a jar, preferably amber-colored.

Apply before going out. Perfect for beach outings.

Sunscreen in Oil Form

If you don’t want that lotion or cream feel, here’s a recipe that will give you a sunscreen in oil form:

  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • Seven drops carrot seed oil
  • 15 drops myrrh oil

Once again, combine all the ingredients and keep the mixture in an amber-colored container, which will avoid spoilage.
