In the United States, it is estimated that at least 100 million Americans are affected by some form of digestive problem. For some people, their problem could become a source of discomfort and irritation, causing them to limit their lifestyles. Unfortunately, some digestive problems can cripple people and can even lead to death.

Digestive problems are a group of issues that affect the whole digestive system. There are some common complaints though, including:

  • Constipation
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Diarrhea
  • Acid reflux

There are various causes depending on the digestive problem. Some of the digestive problems are easy to control by means of changing some of the dietary habits, while others may require medication. There are also problems that are actually a sign of an underlying medical condition.

If you are constipated, you find it difficult to move your bowels. Oftentimes, this involves eliminating less than three times a week. The stools are also very hard to pass because of their firmness, which signals that you don’t have enough water and/or fiber in the body, which are two of the most common causes of constipation. There are also some medications that may lead to constipation. Changes in regular routine, such as traveling may also cause constipation. Increased hormone levels can also slow down the processing of food, which is why most pregnant women experience constipation.

You have hemorrhoids if your lower rectum and anus have swollen blood vessels. Hemorrhoids are painful and itchy at times and they can be due to several factors, including pregnancy, straining, constipation, standing or sitting for extended period of time, and being overweight.

Unlike constipation, you eliminate several times a day when you have diarrhea. There are also several things that can cause diarrhea and these include infection due to bacteria or viruses. You may have drunk water or eaten some food that is contaminated. Traveling to other countries can cause diarrhea because some people are not used to the germs that are found in that foreign place. Consuming dairy products, caffeinated drinks, and food with artificial sweeteners and additives can cause people to respond through diarrhea.

Acid reflux is quite common in which the muscle in the esophagus doesn’t work properly. This muscle is responsible for the opening and closing of the esophagus whenever you swallow. You feel a burning sensation in the throat and chest, which is why this is sometimes known as heartburn.

Oftentimes, it is easy to treat digestive problems. There is even no need to go to the doctor. However, if it persists, it may be due to a serious medical problem. To always be on the safe side, don’t fail to mention what you’re feeling to your GP.
