Eating blueberries has been a tradition ever since the time of the Native Americans hundreds of years ago. Make it yours too. All you need is just one cup of it every morning, and you can already take advantage of all of these benefits:
1. Blueberries can reduce blood pressure.
In a study conducted by a team of experts from Florida State University, they discovered that serving yourself with even just one cup of the fruit every day may already decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease by reducing blood pressure, especially among post-menopausal women. The fruit can also prevent stiffness of the arteries.
In an 8-week study, post-menopausal women who received at least 22 grams of dried and frozen blueberry powder experienced an average of 5.1% of systolic blood pressure reduction. Blueberries also increase the production of nitric oxide, which is responsible for dilating blood vessels and arteries, by almost 70%.
2. Blueberries may prevent type 2 diabetes and obesity.
A team of researchers from University of Basque Country with the aid of U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted a study on the effects of a phenolic compound called pterostilbene. Similar to resveratrol, it’s found in small doses in grapes, red wine, and blueberries. Using a lab mice model, they were able to determine that this compound prevents the build-up of fat, making the fruit a possible solution in fighting obesity and type 2 diabetes in the near future.
3. Blueberries are a very powerful antioxidant.
They are considered to be one of the best sources of antioxidants among all the fruits and vegetables. These include gallic acid, which is known for its anti-fungal and anti-viral properties.
As antioxidants, they are capable of controlling or even preventing free radical damage that contributes to premature aging and the diagnosis of chronic diseases very early in life.
4. Blueberries help take care of your skin.
One of the prominent signs of aging is wrinkles. This happens when the body’s production of collagen that makes the skin more elastic decreases, a natural occurrence as the person ages. Nevertheless, blueberries contain around 24% vitamin C. This vitamin not only prevents further skin damage but also improves the performance of collagen including enhancing the fiber’s texture.
